Genting Highlands Resort named world’s top casino resort

KUALA LUMPUR: Genting Highlands Resort defeated many a familiar name in the casino business to win the prestigious International Travel Award — The 2007 World Travel Award for the World’s Leading Casino Resort at the 14th Annual World Travel Awards Gala ceremony.
The local resort was nominated along with world renowned Ceasars Palace Las Vegas (USA), D’oreale Grande, Emperor Palace (South Africa), MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Vegas (USA), Park Hyatt Mendoza (Argentina), Star City Hotel & Casino, Sydney (Australia) and The Venetian (Macau). “We have always striven to provide the best products and services to our valued customers,” said Resorts World Bhd executive vice president Alan Teo who accepted the award on behalf of the group. Held at the Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort & Spa on the Carribean island of Providenciales last month, the event was attended by 330 travel trade representitives from around the world. The award, touted as the Oscar of the travel and tourism industry, acknowledges industry excellence, Resorts World said in a statement.
Genting Set to Enter Online Gaming Market
Genting International plc, a division of Malaysia’s Genting Group, has received approval from the Singapore Exchange (SGX) to venture into the online gaming market in the United Kingdom and Alderney. As part of its listing conditions, the company was required to seek approval from the exchange before effecting any acquisition or venture into online gaming operations. The company received the necessary approval yesterday from SGX and now intends to apply for a remote gambling licence from the Alderney Gambling Control Commission through its subsidiary Genting Stanley Alderney Ltd. Genting Stanley Alderney was incorporated in Alderney in November 2007. Genting has increased its share of the UK gambling market in the past year with £650 million worth of acquisitions, buying London’s Maxims Casino as well as casino operator Stanley Leisure. The company has also acquired a 10% shareholding in Rank Group plc, sparking speculation of a bidding war for the UK bingo and casino operator whose share value has plunged since an earnings warning in October 2007.
